On June 21 we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) in Canada. It is a day that is meant to highlight the many distinct cultures, traditions and communities of Indigenous peoples in Canada, which include First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

June 21 was chosen because it falls on the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year, and holds cultural significance for many nations.

This year we are celebrating NIPD on Thursday, June 15 at Newnham Campus for the unveiling of Seneca's Norval Morrisseau painting, and revealing if it is real, or if it is a fake. This in-person event is hosted by the EDI team and co-sponsored by the Art Committee.

Registration is not required.

Watch There Are No Fakes to learn more about the shocking story behind the forgery industry, and how it leads Bare Naked Ladies band member, Kevin Hearn, down an increasingly twisted rabbit hole.

Join us on Thursday, June 15 at 1 p.m. at Newnham Campus in Room A4508.

Event schedule:

  • 1 p.m: Morriesseau painting unveiling
  • 1:10 p.m: Address by Morrisseau Art Consulting firm on how to identify fakes
  • 1:35 p.m: Assessment reveal of our piece
  • 1:40 p.m: Q&A
  • 1:50 p.m: Guided tour of Indigenous art on campus
  • 2:30 p.m: Walk concludes on 4th floor of CITE (Building K) with a talk from a special guest-artist
  • 3 p.m: Event concludes with coffee/tea, etc.
