Volunteer Opportunity for Students: Seneca Office of Sustainability

The Urban Agriculture Enterprise Support Program and the Seneca Office of Sustainability will be implementing an urban farm space and planting native perennials at Seneca College Newnham campus. The location will support research, student learning, community involvement, and collaboration. The objective of the activity is to construct and install raised planters and to plant native perennials.

When: August 4: 9:00 am 

Volunteer requirements:

  • Be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Be able to stand, bend, and crouch for prolonged periods of time

Activities will be split into two groups:

  1. Research farm bed construction group activities
  • Transporting of materials from Research Garage to construction site
  • Measuring of lumber
  • Leveling of construction site
  • Assembling research farm beds
  • Placing logs and soil into research farm beds
  • Planting crops
  • Watering of newly planted crops
  1. Perennial planting group activities
  • Removal of plant material
  • Digging and planting of perennials
  • Watering of newly planted perennials

Tools and Equipment

  • Provided by volunteers:
  • Personal safety equipment such as gloves, hats
  • Water bottles to refill
  • Provided by Seneca:
  • Shovels
  • Garden trowels
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Measuring tape
  • Saws/hammers
  • Water
