Seneca marketing students brought home top prize on their home turf at the the Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Case Competition (OCMC), held Thursday, Dec. 1 and Friday, Dec. 2.

Students from a dozen Ontario colleges enrolled in specialized marketing programs came together to compete in one of 12 case categories, focusing on subjects such as integrated marketing communications, direct marketing, and entrepreneurship. Each team has limited time to analyze a real industry case and recommend strategies to address the problem in a 15-minute presentation to a panel of industry judges.

To secure the win, Seneca students placed first in the entrepreneurship, international and direct categories, with second place finishes in the research and quiz bowl competitions. And to top it off, Business - Marketing student Swaraj Bhowmick received the Lydiatt Award, in recognition of leadership, integrity, and OCMC spirit.  This is the second year in a row a Seneca student has won the Lydiatt Award.

“These marketing students have worked hard over the past several months preparing for this event,” said Scott Campbell, Professor, Seneca’s School of Marketing, and OCMC 2022 Committee Head. “OCMC is a prestigious event that attracts the best and the brightest college students in Ontario. It is an extraordinary experience for them and is often the pinnacle of their academic journey.”

The Ontario College Marketing Competition is an annual event that started in 1980. Each year a different college hosts the competition and customizes the theme for the event.  As the 2022 host, Seneca themed the event Game Changers to celebrate the next-generation marketers who will shape the industry’s landscape as thought leaders and innovators.

“Seneca is proud to have hosted OCMC this year,” said Nadia Bedok, Acting Chair, Seneca’s School of Marketing. “We have delivered a memorable experience for all, thanks to our faculty-led planning and production team, the many student volunteers and sponsors.”

Scotiabank was OCMC 2022’s Presenting Game Changer sponsor, and more than 450 guests attended.

“My peers and I were on pins and needles waiting to hear if we placed in the competition,” said Yasmine Shateri, a student in Seneca’s Business Administration Marketing program, who competed in the retail case category with fellow student Dylan Heida. “All of us are now better prepared to start our careers just by having participated in this event.”

The next Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition will be hosted by Georgian College in Barrie in the fall of 2023.
