Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced an extension to the policy changes to current post-graduation work permit (PGWP) eligibility requirements related to studying abroad. These changes will be in effect until Aug. 31, 2023.

These changes will affect students differently depending on when you submitted your study permit application:

If you submitted a study permit application and obtained an acknowledgement of receipt from IRCC on or before Aug. 31, 2022:

Any study time you complete abroad after Sept. 1, 2023 will be deducted from the length of your PGWP.

If you submitted a study permit application and obtained an acknowledgment of receipt after Aug. 31, 2022:

  • You must complete at least 50 per cent of your program in Canada
  • If your program includes courses with required in-class learning activities (e.g., hybrid or in-person delivery), you must be in Canada and come to campus for your classes; check your program delivery to confirm
  • Your classes in Canada may be delivered online and/or in Seneca’s flexible, hybrid or in-person format and you must meet all the other PGWP requirements

Any study time you complete abroad after Sept. 1, 2023 will be deducted from the length of your PGWP.
